    Question

Hi Im a student at howard payne university in Texas, Ive allways been into super 8mm film my parents shot super8 even when video became popular so ive been around It in a way. But now im shooting it Ive shot one roll of it durring my summer at a summer camp where I was the videographer. Ive got it sitting here and Im un able to view it.
Im wanting it transfered. I dont have the money for a rank transfer because Its to expensive. What is a nice step down from that and where Is there a place where I can get that done. Also where is a good place in the states to buy film. Im realy excited about shooting in film instead of video to me its just so much cooler =) Im the only one here at my school thats doing this, were all digital here and dont learn film. Ive been lurking here for quite some time so im glad to finaly post. thanks everyone!

    Hello,
It's nice to hear from a fello film student. Isn't it crazy how a person can now graduate with a degree in film without ever having touched a piece of film!?
Anyway I'm not too sure about this transfer thing but if you want to go super cheap to video, which it sounds like you're familliar with, one option you might consider is making your own telecine, you can get a super 8 projector for 20$ on e-bay, project your film onto a smooth surface, have your video camera running right along side and record your film image.
As far as film goes i always use kodak. It's a reasonable price just under 10$ for a box of tri-x while color is just a bit more. I hope i've helped, good luck.

I have seen some places that will do a transfer to VHS for $20 to $30. You'll probably want the film cleaned and prepped before transfer. That'll add a little to the cost. Follow some of the links on Mike Brantley's Super 8 site. I've got some Super 8 links, including processing and transfer labs, on my site: www.sagecreekproductions.com.
You might try calling the Austin Cinemaker Co-op, which specializes in Super 8 moviemaking. They know some labs in Austin
that will do the transfers cheap. Here's their number: (512) 236-8877.
